Why is this novel important to me? What if I don’t like to read novels?

Good literature is meant to be challenging. It makes us questions our deepest-held believes. It puts demands on our time. It engages the mysteries of life. The writer cannot please everyone. But the invitation needs to be open to all. Groundswell will not exist only in written form. Other artists will participate in creating a visual presentation of the story. This will include illustrations for individual chapters. As well, live performances will supplement the writing process so even the non-reader can join in the experience.

Why shouldn’t we leave it up to the market support your writing? If your novels haven’t caught on by now, why are you deserving of money? Aren’t we just sustaining your personal illusion about your art?

I know that I have a lot to learn before I become the writer that I want to be. But I have already had readers who have enjoyed what I have written. The very fact that I have written twenty novels means that I have learned a great deal about the writing process. I want to share this knowledge with others so that they will be inspired to write their stories. I have already taught writing, and I want to describe everything that I have discovered in the interim.

Groundswell is part of a radical education program. Writing a novel is not the same thing as manufacturing a car. It takes a lot more to be a great novelist than understanding how the parts work together. But knowledge does help the novelist hone his skill. I spend days working on mathematics and trying to simplify these insights into basic intuitions. This helps to inspire the writing process. Fiction offers a deeper understanding of our place in the world. I want to continue to devote myself to this task.

How long will it take to complete the novel?

Groundswell is intended to be 2,000 pages long. Based on my experience writing my other novels, I estimate the writing will take three years. For the immediate future, I would like to devote myself full time to writing the novel.

Will the novel be posted online?

I plan to post the complete novel online. Groundswell is conceived of as an artistic process. For this reason, I will serialize the novel as I complete sections or chapters. This will involve the readers in one part of the overall process.

What is the Groundswell process?

I have committed myself to writing this novel to document what I want to be a shared artistic experience. The process of writing will included public discussion, readings, performances, and other associated artistic activities. Where possible, I intend to include artistic collaborators in the process. While I will continue to maintain artistic control over the writing of the novel, I welcome others to engage in the overall experience.

Why should I care? This all seems a little pretentious. I have enough to worry about just to survive!

Groundswell offers new strategies to survive the mess around us. It plunges us into the chaos so that we can learn its internal rhythms.

Why do you, Kenny Crucial, think that you’re special? Why should you have the time to spend on your pet projects? Aren’t there a lot more desperate situations that need to be remedied in our community?

I am looking for other like-minded souls who trust my vision. I have studied in school. And I have been a teacher. But I also recognize that we all need a new kind of education that usually doesn’t take place in school. I am here to offer nuggets of wisdom that can help all of us make sense of the confusion.

I am putting forward a constructive plan to benefit our community in the long run. Without a strong foundation, we only leave ourselves susceptible to further desperation. My writing has already yielded deep insights into Mathematics, Economics, and Anthropology. I am primarily an artist so I need to keep writing novels to learn more that help strengthen our overall education.
